Pathology
the study of disease and the structural and functional changes in cells and tissues

Study of disease and, in particular, the structural and functional changes that take place in cells and tissues

Central to the examination of tissue samples, exfoliated calls and body fluids, a wide range of histological stains is available to selectively identify particular cell components and abnormal cell and tissue morphology using Nikon’s new ergonomic Eclipse Ci clinical upright microscope and Eclipse Ni upright microscopes. Similarly, fluorescent dyes and immunohistochemical labels can also be used to target specific proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Telepathology/cytology technologies also greatly assist in real-time assessment of biopsies by pathologists in remote locations, in training, and archiving specimens.  Nikon’s Digital Sight series cameras and DS-L3 imaging system enable clinics to implement telepathology with ease. The impact of gene alterations on protein function and disease can be investigated using a variety of imaging techniques on the Eclipse Ti and TS100 inverted microscopes and powerful  A1R+/A1+ confocal laser microscopes, with the BioStation time-lapse incubator imaging systems ideal for cell culture observations. Knowledge of these changes may be used to diagnose disease, make rapid diagnostic decisions during surgery, ascertain the cause of death and to better understand the causes, mechanisms and consequences of disease.
