Haematology
the study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood disease

Haematology is the study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood disease

Haematology is the study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood disease. Changes in the structure and number of different blood components can be indicative of blood disorders and other diseases. Many of these changes can be observed in blood and bone marrow preparations (aspirate and biopsy) using light microscopy. Cells are smeared thinly onto glass microscope slides to allow individual cells types to be recognized and counted. A number of stains are available that help in the identification of particular cells and cell organelles. Giemsa, for example, is used in blood and bone marrow preparations and stains red blood cells pink, platelets pale pink, lymphocyte cytoplasm blue and leucocyte chromatin magenta. Giemsa can also be used to detect blood parasites such as malaria and other spirochete and protozoan microorganisms. Telepathology/cytology technologies also greatly assist in real-time assessment by pathologists in remote locations, in training, and archiving specimens. Nikon’s Digital Sight series cameras and DS-L3 imaging system enable clinics to implement telepathology with ease.

Imaging Challenges

How do I achieve high throughput screening in my lab?

With the amount of slides that need screening, many users can find the task cumbersome and tiring. Nikon’s new range of Ci microscopes has been carefully designed with the user in mind and all are fully ergonomic including accessories.

How can I achieve high throughput screening without the mess of oil lenses?

Oil lenses generate dirt and can be quite messy for the user to use plus they need to clean their lens after every use. Nikon’s CFI60 Plan Apochromat 60x and 100x dry lenses are perfect for Haematology and have none of the mess of oil lenses.  Nikon’s lenses have incredibly high numerical apertures making them perfect for haematology.
