R&D Magazine Awards Nikon Instruments' COOLSCOPE Top 100 New Product of the Year
August 2, 2004
MELVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 2, 2004 -- Nikon Instruments, Inc., (http://www.nikonusa.com ) a world leader in the development of advanced optical technology, today announced that R&D Magazine, a preeminent publication serving applied research and development, university, non-profit
and government professionals, has chosen COOLSCOPE, a fully automated, web-enabled microscopy imaging system as one of the most technologically significant products introduced over the past year.
The winning of an R&D 100 Award provides a mark of excellence known to industry, government, and academia as proof that the product represents one of the most innovative ideas of the year. Some of the most advanced and revolutionary innovations over the last 50 years have been recognized by R&D Magazine including anti-lock brakes, liquid crystal displays and HDTV technology.
"Nikon Instruments is pleased to receive an award that recognizes the significance and value of COOLSCOPE as we are about to launch the COOLSCOPE VS," said Mr. Lee Shuett, executive vice president, Nikon Instruments. "The COOLSCOPE represents Nikon's commitment to significant innovation and optical excellence and defines our approach to delivering simple, elegant solutions to complex technical or practical problems."
COOLSCOPE is a full microscopy system equipped with high-precision optics and a five mega pixel digital camera to generate detailed images that can be accessed from a public or private network. In addition, COOLSCOPE provides maximum convenience and ergonomic comfort through its one-unit design that eliminates eyepieces by offering observations through the use of a monitor.
COOLSCOPE's highly intuitive software enables easy navigation and operation while its TCP/IP network-ready system delivers control over distributed image storage and remote viewing. Micro and macro images of a specimen are simultaneously visible on a monitor and users can save up to 12 previous observation conditions and specimen positions for instant image recall. Aperture and brightness are adjusted automatically, while stage movement, focusing, and magnification changeover are all digitally motorized. An LED illuminator provides bright, uniform, and cool light with a constant color temperature.
The R&D 100 Awards, now in its 42nd year, names the most innovative new products introduced into the market over the past year as selected by a panel of independent judges as well as editors of R&D Magazine. All entries are initially judged by outside experts. Outside judges are chosen from among professional consultants, university faculty, and industrial researchers with superior expertise and long experience in the areas they are judging. They must also be completely unbiased and have no conflicts of interest with any entries they are judging.
