CFI60 optical system | CFI60 optical system

Key Words: Resolution, chromatic aberration (lateral), parfocal, working distance, finite optical system, chromatic aberration (axial), micromanipulation, N.A.

Definition:CFI60 is the Nikon's proprietary microscope optical system. 'CFI' stands for chromatic aberration-free infinity and '60' refers to the parfocal distance

TECHNOLOGY:

Nikon's CFI60 optical system incorporates a tube lens with a focal length of 200 mm, an objective with a parfocal distance of 60 mm, and an objective thread size of 25 mm.

The 60 mm parfocal distance (compared with 45 mm for most other manufacturer's infinity systems) and larger thread size enables longer working distances and high N.A.s providing greater resolution, ease of operation and flexibility in accommodating a wider range of specimens. In the CFI60 infinity system, the distance between the microscope objective and the eyepiece tube is not fixed. This allows imaging accessories to be inserted into the optical path to accommodate greater imaging capabilities (for example, filters, analyzers, compensators, DIC prisms, reflectors, illuminators and detectors). In addition, the height of the eyepiece tube can be adjusted to accommodate users of varying heights and enabling comfortable, strain-free operation.

APPLICATIONS:

The CFI60 infinity optical system offers advantages for all both industrial and biological imaging applications. CFI60 lenses generally have higher N.A.s and longer working distances than comparable objectives from other manufacturers and provide increased resolution, greater light-gathering capability, and high performance in confocal imaging. Longer working distances allow thicker specimens to be focused from top to bottom without fear of breaking the cover glass or damaging the objective. Applying immersion oil is easier, as is changing specimens. Thicker-bottomed chambers may be accommodated on the microscope and micromanipulation becomes possible with lenses of higher magnification.

MICROSCOPE CONFIGURATION:

All Nikon's Eclipse series microscopes incorporate CFI60optics. In Nikon's Ti series, infinity optics have been fully exploited allowing the distance between the microscope body and the objectives to be increased by up to an extra 80 mm. This allows the introduction of a wide variety of imaging accessories, such as Nikon's Perfect Focus System, to create a modular microscope imaging station, without any need to modify the microscope body.
