Observation of Prepared Slide
Commercially available prepared microscope slides are often used in schools and colleges to introduce students to microscopy and the skills of slide interpretation. Slides for the biological and medical sciences consist mainly of fixed and stained specimens designed for brightfield illumination using an upright microscope and are essential for the training of pathologists, haematologists, cytologists and microbiologists. Prepared slides are also available for the material and geological sciences and consist of thin sections for viewing under polarized light (translucent thin sections) and/or reflected light (opaque samples with surface features).
A quality optical system in an educational microscope is critical in determining image resolution, image brightness and good color - features that help to inspire students and make it easier for them to acquire the skills of slide interpretation. Educational microscopes must also be robust enough to accommodate inexperienced users. It is useful to have features that help to protect delicate optical components from damage. When using short working distance objectives, for example, the upper limit of the stage movement can be restricted so that the objective does not make contact with the specimen slide.
Many students are now being introduced to microscopy through the use of prepared digital or 'virtual' slides. These never fade or break and can be accessed from a PC, via a local area network or the Internet.
Key microscopy techniques related to the observation of prepared slides include brightfield, fluorescence, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, polarizing, digital imaging, digital slide, and telepathology.
